A single phrase carries the weight of a nation. To say "impeach him" is to ignite a fuse. Yet most people shouting it have no clue what happens next. It is not a vote to remove a president from the Oval Office. It is a specific accusation of misconduct. The Constitution lays out a path designed for extreme moments. We treat it like a political football. But the rules are rigid and brutal.

What Does "Impeach Him" Actually Mean?

Impeachment is a formal charge. It is an indictment. Think of a grand jury deciding whether there is enough evidence for a trial. The House of Representatives brings the charge. They vote on specific articles. A simple majority is required. If they pass it, the process moves to the Senate.

The Senate holds the actual trial. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court presides. Senators act as the jury. The House appoints managers to act as prosecutors. This is not a quick event. It is a drawn-out political spectacle. It exposes every fault line in the government.

The Two Grounds for Impeachment

The Founders gave us only two clear reasons. The Constitution states: "Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors." Treason is the easiest to define. It involves levying war against the nation or aiding its enemies. Bribery is also relatively straightforward.

"High Crimes and Misdemeanors" is a different animal. This phrase confuses people. It does not mean standard criminal statutes. It refers to abuses of public trust. It covers actions that undermine the office itself. Alexander Hamilton explained this in Federalist No. 65. A president might commit acts that disgrace the presidency, even if they are not technically illegal under common law.

The House Vote: Where the Battle Starts

The journey to impeach him begins in committee. The House Judiciary Committee typically investigates first. They hold hearings. They subpoena documents and testimony. This phase can last months. The committee then drafts articles of impeachment.

These articles go to the full House floor. A simple majority vote passes the measure. The president is then "impeached." It is an official marking. It is not removal. It is a formal reprimand by the legislative branch. Many presidents have been impeached in the history books. Only two faced the Senate trial. Neither was convicted and removed.

The Senate Trial: The Harder Hurdle

Conviction requires a two-thirds supermajority in the Senate. This is 67 votes in the current chamber. The political math here is nearly impossible. Impeachment becomes a party-line exercise. Senators rarely cross the aisle. The trial involves opening arguments, witness testimonies, and deliberation.

The penalty for conviction is removal from office. The Senate can also vote separately to ban the individual from holding future federal office. If the vote falls short of 67, the president walks away. He remains in power. The public sees a deeply divided Congress.

Why the Call to Impeach Never Stops

Political movements use the phrase "impeach him" as a pressure valve. It rallies a base. It signals moral outrage. It forces opponents onto the defensive. The call often comes during periods of scandal or perceived overreach.

History shows us the risks. Impeachment is a tool of last resort. Using it frivolously weakens the institution. It becomes just another weapon in the partisan arsenal. The process demands a standard higher than ordinary politics. Yet modern discourse often lowers that standard to a mere political slogan.
