What Is the Regulation Size of a Volleyball Court

The Court Dimensions That Actually Matter

Every league has its quirks. But when you strip away the house rules, one standard governs the playing surface. Guys, explore more in Guides And Explainers and what is the regulation size of a volleyball court.

The court is 18 meters long. That equals roughly 59 feet. The width is 9 meters, or about 29.5 feet. These numbers are non-negotiable for sanctioned play.

The playing area forms a perfect rectangle. Every line marking sits exactly 5 centimeters wide. This measurement applies to all professional and collegiate tournaments.

The Attack Line: Breaking the Court in Thirds

A center line splits the court into two equal halves. Each half measures 9 meters deep. That is 3 meters less than the total length.

The attack line sits 3 meters from the center line. On each side, it creates a front zone and a back zone. Players rotate between these areas based on their serve order.

The front zone extends from the attack line to the net. The back zone runs from the attack line to the end line. A standard net stands 2.43 meters high for men and 2.24 meters for women.

The Free Zone: Space You Cannot Ignore

The court stops at the lines. But the action does not.

A free zone surrounds the playing surface. This buffer area extends 3 meters from every boundary line. It gives defenders room to dig balls without crashing into bleachers.

The ceiling height matters too. For indoor competitions, the vertical clearance must be at least 7 meters. This leaves sufficient space for towering spikes and blocks.

The International Volleyball Federation governs these measurements. You can view the complete official rules at their governing body site (FIVB Official Rules).

Net and Post Placement Specifics

Posts stand outside the sidelines on both sides. The net attaches to these posts at the correct regulation height. For men's matches, the top of the net reaches 2.43 meters. Women's competition lowers that mark to 2.24 meters.

Antennae attach to the net edges. They extend 80 centimeters above the net. These vertical rods define the sideline boundaries in the air.

Any ball landing on the antenna is out of bounds. Players must avoid contacting the antenna during play. These small poles enforce the wide 9-meter width with precision.

Why Court Size Changes the Strategy

A smaller court would favor quick reactions. A larger court would reward raw power and speed.

The regulation size forces a specific balance. Attackers must time their jumps perfectly over the 3-meter line. Defenders must cover large lateral distances in the free zone.

Beach volleyball shrinks the dimensions to 16 by 8 meters. This smaller surface changes the spacing and pace dramatically. But indoor rules stick to the 18-by-9 standard.

Key Measurement Recap

ElementRegulation Size
------
Length18 meters / 59 feet
Width9 meters / 29.5 feet
Attack Line3 meters from center
Free Zone3 meters from boundary
Net Height (Men)2.43 meters
Net Height (Women)2.24 meters

Every dimension supports fair competition. Markings must stay crisp and visible throughout the match. Referees measure the court before tip-off to ensure compliance.
